BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Tuesday filed a leave to appeal petition with the Supreme Court seeking its stay on the trial proceedings of Gatco corruption case against her.
Her lawyer submitted the petition on behalf of her challenging the High Court verdict that cleared the way for trial court in the case to run the trial proceedings.
“We will move the petition before the chamber judge of the appellate division of the SC for its hearing”, said Mahbub Uddin Khokon, a lawyer for Khaleda.
The High Court, on August 5, 2015, rejected a writ petition filed by Khaleda Zia challenging the trial proceedings of the case.
On February 15, 2015, the HC released the full text of its verdict that rejected the two petitions filed by Khaleda Zia challenging the legality of proceedings in the graft case.
On September 2, 2007, the Anti-Corruption Commission lodged the Gatco graft case with Tejgaon Police Station naming Khaleda, her youngest son late Arafat Rahman Koko, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami and 10 others as suspects.
